TRANSPARENT WHITE
CLOUDED PANTOMIME
Elizabeth Gerringer
Transparent
white clouded pantomime,
Opaque at morning,
White-white at noontime.
Colored glass with rainbows in afternoon windows,
Wheatfields reflect the blessings of sun's glow.
Evening now, crisp, cool,
Some early snow
And light mist.
I miss the dreams and hope.
New dreams.
New hope.
More snow covering the dreams.
Lilacs grow through snow and frost.
It is freezing now, the lilacs keep on growing.
To live, after all is said and done,
Is slightly short of a miracle.
Even if we don't believe in miracles,
Miracles believe in us.
Miracles reappear in sudden forms,
An old friend's face,
A flower,
And a golden afternoon.
Mist and seagulls circle around the rock where I stand,
A small valley of rocks where I will linger
Until some small child appears
Or I hear the sound of a lost automobile.
